Belt sanders are among the most valuable tools in the world of sanding and abrasives. That is because they are multi-use devices that work well for several sanding applications, including rough-surface sanding, scribing, leveling, rounding, and free-hand shaping. They offer a powerful but precise linear sanding action, allowing you to work along with the grain of the wood. This form of straight-line sanding is a must-have if you want to achieve a better-looking finish. Although there are several types of belt sanders on the market, a staple in every woodworkers shop is a portable belt sander. If you are new to using a portable belt sander, continue reading for some helpful advice.

Portable Belt Sanding Tips:

☑ Practice makes perfect! So grab some scrap wood and practice getting a feel for your new portable sander. You can gauge its power, movement patterns, and sanding action before using it for a real project.

☑ Always check that your belt sander is turned to the OFF switch before plugging it into the electrical outlet. You do not want the sander to start up before you are ready to use it. This can cause serious injuries.

☑ Always maintain a firm grip on your belt sander. Its powerful force can easily allow it to move in its own direction.

☑ Tightly secure your work piece in place before turning on your sander. Friction will cause your work piece to shift and vibrate if it is not severely properly.

☑ Never start or stop the motor while the sander is still touching your work piece. Always lift it clear of the work piece surface before starting or stopping the motor. This will reduce shock load on the belt and prevent unwanted finishing marks on your piece.

☑ Do not use additional pressure to sand a surface. The weight of the belt sander is enough to provide the pressure needed to render a smooth and level surface. Simply continue with even, over-lapping strokes and let the sander to the work for you.

☑ As you lower your sander to your work piece, place down the rear of the belt first, and then level the machine as it urges to move forward.

☑ Sand parallel to the wood grain, using straight, overlapping strokes. Avoid tilting the sander to prevent accidental deep cuts. So not stop in the middle of sanding, and instead, always follow through completely with every stroke.
